Notes, statements, and legal, business, and personal correspondence; tax receipts for Kershaw County, S.C.; papers re debt collection, cotton cultivation, decedents estates, and correspondence re business transactions with various firms including attorney James Conner, attorney Louis D. DeSaussure, and Witte Brothers, factors and commission merchants, all of Charleston, S.C.; attorney W.A. Clark, of Columbia, S.C.; and J. I[zard] Middleton & Co., cotton factors and commission merchants, of Baltimore, Md. Collection also includes letter, 24 Aug. 1875, from Kerchner & Calder Brothers, Wilmington, N.C., re Mr. McClain's purchase of a steamboat, lamenting that "he could not make up the stock as the Camden people only wanted to pay $2000" instead of $3000; and 4 letters, 12 Apr.- 23 Nov. 1876, E. Miller Boykin, Baltimore, Md., to "Cousin Jimmie," Camden, S.C., re a swindle perpetrated by mutual acquaintance Hal Clark who falsely claimed to hold funds in the Carolina Bank of Columbia, S.C., and who by virtue of Boykin's introduction fraudulently cashed a $150 draft from a Baltimore bank, a loss later reimbursed by Boykin.

A native of Charleston, S.C., James Conner was an attorney and a Confederate general. He served as U.S. District Attorney and S.C. Attorney General (1876), and became a member of the Confederate military court of the 2nd Corps in 1863. He was the son of Henry Workman Conner (1797-1861) and Julia Ann M. Courtney (1804-1881).
